In our society today, there is still often the assumption that menstruation is something that is embarrassing, taboo to be discussed, even considered ‘disgrace’ for women. In fact, Islam actually views menstruation as part of the nature and a sign of the perfection of the creation of Allah SWT. If understood correctly, menstruation is not only a biological issue, but also a noble mandate.

What is menstruation in the view of Islam?

Medically, menstruation is the discharge of blood from a woman’s womb at a certain time each month. However, Islam did not see him just a biological phenomenon. She is a sign of a woman’s physical maturity, preparation to become a mother, and part of Sunnatullah in human creation.

In the book of Al-Organah explained, menstruation is:

Jabla’s blood came out of the uterus of a woman as a health problem for no reason

This means, “Natural blood that comes out of a woman’s womb is in good health for no reason and occurs at certain times.” (Abdurrahman bin Abdullah bin Abdul Qadir As-Saqqaf, Al-Emibanah Wal Ifadhah, [Surabaya: Haramain, 2019]Pages: 12).

Based on the above information it can be concluded that menstruation is a condition in which a woman bleeds from Farji ‘(vagina) that comes out of the base of the uterus in good health at a certain time.

From Ummul Mu’minin, Sayyidah ‘Aisha Ra, he said:

This is something that God has been written about Adam’s daughter

Meaning: “This (menstruation) is something that God has been determined for Adam’s daughter.” (Hours. Bukhori and Muslim Imam)

This hadith confirms that menstruation is not a disgrace or curse, but the determination of Allah ‘Azza Wa Jalla.

Menstruation is not a disgrace, but the grace of alloH

Unfortunately, there are still many families or people who talk about menstruation with shame, even consider it a lack of women. Even though Rosululloh SAW was actually very open in talking about menstruation with wives and friends. In Sahih Bukhari And Sahih MuslimMany narrations that explain how he gives direction about the procedures for purification, worship, even manners during menstruation.

Imam An-Nawawi Di Al-Majmū ‘Syarh Al-Muhadzdzab assert that menstrual blood is not something that reduces the glory of women. In fact, when a woman cannot pray or fast during menstruation, it is a form Rukhsoh (relief) and love of Allah SWT to His servants. So, the cessation of prayer or fasting is not a sin, but worship in the form of obedience to the rules of Allah.

Menstruation as trust

Menstruation is also a belief. A woman is asked to maintain cleanliness, health, and courtesy during menstruation. Imam al-Ghazali Di Ihyā ” ulūm ad-dīn Explain that one form of body mandate is to care for it according to the nature that God has set. This includes maintaining cleanliness during menstruation, knowing when to start and end, and carry out the procedures for purifying correctly.

This is where the importance of education for young women. Parents, teachers, and educational institutions must provide an understanding that menstruation is a natural, even noble thing. This knowledge is not only a matter of cleanliness, but also appreciation for the dignity of women as creatures that Allah is glorified.

Relevance to modern life

In the modern era, there are still many young women who are ashamed to talk about menstruation. As a result, not a few who lack knowledge about reproductive health and syar’i manners related to menstruation. In fact, the more open understanding of menstruation, the easier it is for women to maintain health and undergo worship according to the guidance of Islamic sharia.

A simple example, although he cannot pray or fast during menstruation, a Muslim woman can still multiply dhikr, read the interpretation of the Qur’an, attend the assembly of science, or write a note of goodness. That way, worship does not stop just because of menstruation.

Menstruation is not a disgrace, but a mandate and a sign of the glory of a woman. Islam has regulated beautifully how women behave during menstruation, not to limit, but to maintain their health, cleanliness, and honor.

With the correct understanding, menstruation is no longer considered taboo or embarrassing. Conversely, he is the grace of Allah SWT that must be maintained and grateful. Let’s change the narrow view into a noble understanding, so that Muslim women are proud of their nature as the servant of Allah who is glorified.

Hope it is useful. Wallohu a’lam.
